Carol is very passionate about the work that the RSL Sub branches do and is extremely honoured to be patron of 2 of her sub branches in her area, Enfield and Kilburn, She sees first hand the support and great work that is being done in these sub branches.

Carol’s passion for the Defence services stemmed from within her immediate family which saw her brother's Anthony Mclean ASM, Edward Mclean and followed by her son Clinton Howson who collectively have spanned over 54 years of service.

Being involved in local government as councillor can be like having a loud speaker at the top of a Mountain. Carol has taken every opportunity to promote community organisations and health and well being such as the OC CHALLENGE (Ovarian Cancer Challenge) Carol was approached by Deb Gracie 10 years ago to help initiate and become the inaugural patron of this organisation in order to help promote healthy lifestyles and awareness for ovarian cancer. The organisation also helps to support women's health issues at the Women's Health Unit at the RAH.

Over the last few years  Angela Condos AM  supported Carol by including the organisation as the past 3 recipients of her The Advertiser Foundation (formally ASFM) Melbourne Cup luncheon and Clipsal  500 enabling more funds for research into ovarian cancer All Monies raised from Angela's lunches have contributed to funding research and psychological support for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer here in SA & NT. The OC Challenge has now moved into a new area independently fundraising for new concepts in the area of scholarships and potential in the future to support SAHMRI always keeping continuity in raising awareness to women in SA about ovarian cancer
